Causes, Symptoms & Treatment – Dr. Anupam Khandelwal

Wrist injuries are among the most common bone injuries encountered in orthopedic practice, especially distal end radius fractures, also known as wrist fractures. Whether due to a fall, accident, or osteoporosis, timely diagnosis and proper treatment are key to restoring hand function and preventing long-term complications.

At my orthopedic practice in Indore, I, Dr. Anupam Khandelwal, bring evidence-based, patient-friendly care to manage these common yet critical injuries.

🔍 What is a Distal End Radius Fracture?

The radius is one of the two large bones in the forearm. The distal end refers to the end of the bone near the wrist. When this part of the bone breaks, it is called a distal end radius fracture.

This type of fracture is especially common in:

  • Older adults with weak bones (osteoporosis)
  • Young adults involved in high-impact accidents
  • Women post-menopause
  • Children during play or sports

📌 In cities like Indore, Bhopal, Ujjain, and Jabalpur, where two-wheeler accidents and falls are common, distal radius fractures are frequently seen in the emergency rooms.

⚠️ Common Causes

  • Slipping and falling on an outstretched hand
  • Road traffic accidents (RTAs)
  • Sports injuries
  • Direct trauma to the wrist

“हाथ के पंजे के पास की हड्डी का टूटना, खासकर गिरने या दुर्घटना में, एक आम लेकिन गंभीर समस्या है। समय पर इलाज जरूरी है।”

🔍 Symptoms to Watch Out For

  • Sudden pain and swelling near the wrist
  • Visible deformity or bending of the wrist
  • Difficulty in wrist movement
  • Bruising or numbness
  • Weak grip strength

🛑 Never ignore a swollen or painful wrist. Delayed treatment may lead to joint stiffness, improper healing, or arthritis.

🩻 Diagnosis

Clinical examination is followed by X-rays, and in some cases, a CT scan may be needed to understand the fracture type.

We classify fractures as:

  • Undisplaced fracture: Bone is broken but in correct alignment
  • Displaced fracture: Bone ends have moved apart
  • Comminuted fracture: Bone is broken into multiple pieces
  • Intra-articular fracture: Fracture extends into the wrist joint

🩹 Treatment Options – Conservative & Surgical

🔹 Non-surgical Treatment

If the fracture is undisplaced or mildly displaced, we may opt for:

  • Closed reduction (manually aligning the bone)
  • Plaster cast immobilization (for 4–6 weeks)
  • Regular X-ray follow-up

🔹 Surgical Treatment

When the bone is severely displaced, intra-articular, or unstable, surgery is recommended:

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF)

This involves using a volar locking plate and screws to stabilize the bone and allow early movement.

External Fixators

In complex, open, or comminuted fractures.

🧑‍⚕️ As an orthopedic surgeon practicing in Indore, I regularly perform both conservative and surgical treatments for distal radius fractures. The choice of treatment depends on patient age, activity level, fracture type, and bone quality.

💪 Post-Treatment Care and Physiotherapy

  • Wrist splints or support after cast/surgery
  • Early mobilization to avoid stiffness
  • Supervised physiotherapy
  • Calcium and Vitamin D supplements for bone healing

🔄 Full recovery can take 8–12 weeks, and with proper care, most patients regain near-normal wrist function.
