Outer Hip Pain Treatment in Indore

Pain over the bony outer side of the hip, especially when lying on that side, can come from the tendons and tissues around the joint.

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is an umbrella term for this pattern. It often involves the gluteal tendons, with or without irritation of a nearby bursa. The familiar term trochanteric bursitis does not describe every case.

Symptoms of GTPS and Gluteal Tendinopathy

Pain may extend down the outer thigh. Location is helpful, but hip arthritis, spinal problems and other conditions can overlap with this pattern.

Common triggers

  • Lying on the painful side or pressure over the outer hip.
  • Walking, stairs or standing on one leg.
  • A sudden increase in walking, running or other loading activity.

Assessment and scans

  • Examination checks tenderness, hip movement, muscle strength and walking.
  • The clinician also considers joint and back-related causes.
  • X-rays, ultrasound or MRI are selected when needed, rather than required for everyone. Persistent weakness may warrant assessment for a tendon tear.
Reduce irritation, rebuild capacity

Treatment for Outer Hip Pain Without Surgery

Treatment usually starts with education, adjusting load and progressive rehabilitation. Complete rest is rarely a useful long-term strategy.

Reduce pressure on the tendons

  • Avoid prolonged lying directly on the painful side; a pillow between the knees may help when lying on the other side.
  • Reduce prolonged leg-crossing and standing with the hip pushed out to one side.
  • Temporarily adjust aggravating walking distances or hills, then build activity gradually.

A guided exercise plan

  • Physiotherapy aims to strengthen the gluteal muscles and improve control.
  • Exercise loading should match your tolerance and be progressed over time.
  • Avoid forcing painful stretches or repeatedly exercising through a major flare; discuss how symptoms respond with your therapist.
If pain persists

Injections, Further Assessment and Surgery

If a structured rehabilitation plan is not helping, the diagnosis, exercise dose and any contributing joint or back problem should be reviewed.

Selected additional options

  • A clinician may advise short-term pain relief after checking medicine safety.
  • A corticosteroid injection may reduce symptoms temporarily in selected cases. Benefits, risks and effects on tendon health need discussion.
  • Persistent symptoms or marked weakness may prompt imaging and a specialist review.

When is surgery considered?

  • Most people are managed without surgery.
  • Selected tendon tears or symptoms that persist despite appropriate treatment may need surgical assessment.
  • Repair or other procedures depend on the actual abnormality. A scan finding by itself does not mean an operation is necessary.
Common questions

Questions About Outer Hip Pain

Is trochanteric bursitis the same as arthritis?

  • No. GTPS concerns tissues around the outside of the hip; arthritis affects the joint surfaces. Both can occur together, so examination matters.

How long does recovery take?

  • Tendon rehabilitation often takes several months, with progress varying by symptom duration, strength and activity demands. Review the plan if pain worsens or progress stalls.

When to Seek Help and What to Bring

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe pain after a fall, inability to bear weight, or a hot painful hip with fever. Do not wait for a routine appointment in these situations.

For a planned consultation

  • Bring previous X-rays or MRI images as well as the written reports.
  • Bring your medicine list and details of previous treatment or surgery.
  • Note what limits walking, sleep, work or sport, and what you hope treatment will improve.
